There are over seventy thousand unpaid carers in East Sussex and more than seven million across the UK. A third of the people we have worked with over the last 5 years are full time, unpaid carers and from what they have been telling me, they have had a really hard time during the C-19 crisis.
Lockdown and shielding have increased the isolation and stress already felt by many carers. Community services and respite care have been severely limited, day centres have been closed and carers’ allowance is pitifully low. Clap for carers aside, I want the government to invest in community services and increase carers’ allowance!
We have funding from East Sussex County Council and Care for the Carers to run a programme of cookery and wellbeing activities for carers in East Sussex. Our aim is give carers a nourishing and uplifting experience which will help them to both eat well and feel supported.
We have a full programme of Cooking for Carers activities running at the Lewes Community Kitchen and in other venues across East Sussex. See what’s on here: Cooking For Carers
All activities are free for unpaid carers in East Sussex. You can book places using the links below or contact firstname.lastname@example.org to book or find out more.
