Africa day 2026

Community Chef CIC and Diversity Lewes are delighted to invite everyone to our annual Africa Day community celebration on Saturday 31st May, from 12pm until 6pm at The Sheds, Phoenix Place, Lewes.

For over 10 years, this free community event has brought people together to celebrate cultural diversity, community spirit, food, music and shared humanity. Rooted in the values of inclusion, appreciation and connection, Africa Day gives us an opportunity to honour the richness and creativity of African cultures and the many contributions of the African diaspora within our communities.

At the heart of the day will be a shared community feast. We warmly encourage attendees to bring a dish to share, helping to create a table that reflects the diversity of our community through food, flavour and tradition. Alongside these shared contributions, Community Chef will prepare a large communal meal as the cornerstone of the feast — a gesture of hospitality, generosity and togetherness.

Following the meal, the celebration will continue with live performances from three local bands from the African diaspora, bringing rhythm, energy and joy to the afternoon. Playing on Sunday are Andrew Eagle, sweet and soulful KwaZulu inspired guitar with support from the kitchen collective, Risenga Makondo trio bringing some next level South African jazz vibe and KaShaka, electrifying acoustic Afro-Latin ensemble – sizzling percussion grooves and soulful horns.

At Community Chef, we believe that sharing food is one of the primary ways of building healthier, more copacetic communities. Eating together encourages conversation, understanding and connection across cultures and generations. In a world where division can too often dominate public life, gathering around a shared table reminds us of what we have in common.

This event is free and open to everyone. Whether you come to share food, enjoy the music, meet neighbours or simply spend time in a welcoming community space, we would love you to join us.
